A six-day camp offering opportunities to expand your musical theater skills and imagine the life of a Broadway performer!

Every year, an amazing set of Guest Broadway performers travels to Des Moines to lead teens in a week-long series of master classes on the “triple threat” skills of musical theater – acting, dancing, and singing. Participants sharpen their performance skills, gain knowledge about the auditioning and casting process, and learn about the Broadway industry from working professionals. The week culminates in a showcase for family and friends. Auditions are not required, although previous theater training or experience is necessary.

For teens entering grades 9 through first year of college, fall 2024.

Attendance Policy

Due to the intense rehearsal schedule, participation in the showcase performance is dependent on full attendance throughout the week. Missed rehearsals may necessitate that a participant give up part or all of their role(s) for the success of the overall performance.

Expectations

The week is designed for aspiring performers who are highly interested in musical theater. Auditions are not required to participate; however, previous training or experience is necessary. (We recommend that participants have experience in at least two of the following areas: singing, dance, and acting.)

MORE ABOUT THE BROADWAY INTENSIVE CAMP
More detailed information about the BROADWAY INTENSIVE will be emailed to camp participants 3–4 weeks prior to the opening day of camp.

THE BROADWAY INTENSIVE was created for high school students who seriously are considering future studies in music, dance, and/or theater or who are seeking to improve as musical theater performers.

  • In this camp, students will learn actual Broadway numbers, including the choreography, from Broadway professionals.
  • These same instructors coach students in all areas of performance, with heavy emphasis on performing a song.
  • Students prepare two solo numbers to use in song coaching.
  • On the first day of camp, often students will be asked to sing one of their solos for the group. Students typically are grouped with their grade levels (9th-10th and 11th-12th).
  • Students are observed and placed in a dance technique class with others of their age and their demonstrated level of dance.
  • Students also work in small groups on their acting skills.
  • Each day, students are asked to push themselves to learn and perform at higher levels through teaching and critiques.
  • Instructors strive to use different methods to push students appropriately, always looking for when a student is ready for the next step.
  • The six-day schedule is filled with rehearsals and coaching sessions that meet each student where they are. Instructors will then work to move students to a new level of performance.
  • By the end of the week, students will share with family and friends what was learned and rehearsed during the week in a culminating showcase where students are featured in either an acting scene, a dance demonstration, or a musical number, and all participate in a fully-choreographed number from a Broadway show.
That is the key to the BROADWAY INTENSIVE: understanding that each student is learning at their own level and that all will be featured in some role in the showcase.

The showcase is a chance to demonstrate what was developed during camp. This end-of-week performance is a secondary focus to the work done in class, the new skills developed, the risks taken, and the reflection on each individual's growth as a performer and person in the arts.
